VMC and zero sideslip — concepts
Learning goals
- Understand that VMC is not fixed in real conditions
- Describe why a small bank toward the operating engine reduces drag
VMC is established by the manufacturer under specific certification conditions, published in the AFM/POH and typically marked by a red radial line. The handbook stresses that in practice VMC varies with factors such as weight, CG, power, density altitude and configuration — the published value is valid only for its certification circumstances.
With one engine out, flying with the ball centered is not the lowest-drag condition. A small bank toward the operating engine, with the right amount of rudder, can achieve zero sideslip and improve climb performance. This lesson is conceptual: exact bank, speeds and procedures come from your AFM/POH and instructor.
