The added multi-engine class rating
Learning goals
- Read §61.63(c) accurately
- Separate added-rating rules from initial certificate eligibility
14 CFR §61.63(c) covers adding a class rating, such as multiengine land, to a pilot certificate you already hold. In summary it requires an authorized instructor's endorsement for competence and proficiency and passing the practical test; it does not require the training-time requirements for the certificate itself, and generally no additional knowledge test if you already hold an airplane rating at that certificate level.
That is different from earning an initial commercial certificate, which has its own eligibility and experience rules elsewhere in Part 61. Read the regulation text yourself, and use the additional-rating table in the Commercial Pilot ACS (FAA-S-ACS-7B) to see which areas apply. Nothing here promises an endorsement or test result.
