Crossing, entering and exiting runways
Learning goals
- Confirm crossing clearances
- Know when you are fully clear of the runway
Before crossing any runway, have a clearance and look both ways for traffic; if in doubt, reconfirm. Hold-short lines can sit well back from the runway, so do not assume you are close.
Use exterior lighting as the FAA describes to make your intentions visible, and make clearing checks before entering any runway. After landing, exit at the first suitable taxiway and remember that the entire aircraft must pass the hold-short line before you are clear. Delay after-landing checklists until you are clear and sure of your taxi instructions.
