Navigation and radio discipline

Learning goals

  • Cross-check GPS with another method
  • Use clear, standard phraseology

Pilotage, dead reckoning, VOR and GPS each have strengths. GPS receivers check signal integrity with RAIM, which needs at least five satellites in view (or four plus baro-aiding). Even so, cross-checking with another method protects you from a wrong waypoint entry or a single failure.

AIM 4-2 says understanding is the single most important thought in pilot–controller communications. Listen before you transmit, think before keying the mic, use the initial-contact format the AIM gives, and never abbreviate your call sign on initial contact. If something is unclear, ask.
